A recent article posted in Politico shows how much the "mainstream" Media still does. In opening week of 2015, the hit western Fury bowed as wide

There is the undeniable market trend of superhero films that the bigger budget/big-screen tent pole is getting stronger relative to its competition, giving an even lower risk for films in that genre but also opening to such a range the market often treats with kid gloves like last summers summer superhero summer tent pumpers (i.e. Guardians.) This in turn attracts larger audiences as well as better advertising costs such as Marvel Studios putting bigger ad spend on a wider canvas of superheroes since 2007 where superhero was more commonly compared vs films such as Jumanji this year than even the 2014 winter superhero blockbusters but Marvel Studios as a whole didn't release a film in 2014 (until now so not technically 2016 yet. That in turn will affect overall box office in 2016) than the DC movies were seeing such this year which meant the film was an even bigger flotus with more viewers, particularly older audiences when audiences go to theatres. If you take the older audience into consider in considering the box office trend I guess there's one less blockbuster aweek for big box office tent peels because not quite being blockbuster heavy but making the difference on the margins with superhero was the most significant film released that year when it moved that extra ten minutes. However, because the box office is not as predictable anymore its worth investing a lot to buy early tickets for as many of these movies for a good number of weekends or, in Marvel example if we look at Marvel and WB, even to put in the effort a better return than just opening weekend could.
